    then falter not o book, fulfil your destiny,

    you not a reminiscence of the land alone,

    you too as a lone bark cleaving the ether, purpos'd i kno for mariners and all their ships.

    致崇高的目的

    to thee old cause

    你哦，崇高的目的！

    你举世无双的，昂扬美好的目的，

    你严格，无悔，甜美的思想，

    流传千古，万众景仰，

    为你经过一场奇怪而惨烈的鏖战，

    （我想历来所有的争斗，或是即将爆发的战争，

    全都是因为你，

    这都是为你唱的颂歌，都是你永恒的进行曲。）

    （啊，战士们！有一场战争不只是为它自己，

    而是有更多的东西悄悄潜伏于后，

    此刻就要在书中现身。）

    你这众星之星啊！

    你这翻腾的道义！你完好地等待破土的幼芽！

    你这核心！

    战争在你的理想周围旋转，

    以它全部狂暴激烈的表演，出于多种原因，

    （其影响远远波及未来的千百年。）

    把这歌咏献给你——我的书和战争本就是一体，

    我的一切和我自己，都融会于你的精神中，

    如同争斗随你转移，

    这本并不自知的书，仍围绕着你的理想，

    正如车轮在它的轴上转动。

    me imperturbe

    我镇定，悠然立于自然之间，

    万物的主人或主妇，坦然面对世间的混乱，

    正如它们般充盈，温顺娴静，包容四海，

    才感到我的生计，潦倒，恶名，瑕疵和罪恶，是如此的不名一文，

    我向着墨西哥海，或在曼哈顿，田纳西，抑或在遥远的北方，深深的内陆

    做一个渔民、猎手、各州或沿海的农民，抑或是在加拿大，在湖畔，

    不论我身处何方，都要宠辱不惊，临危不乱，

    就像树木和动物一样，坚韧面对黑夜风暴，人情冷暖。
