为师之道

    就成年人而言，他们总是习惯把艰辛、无趣、漫长的求学生涯忘记。为了记住所有的基本知识，他们必须没完没了地付出令人难以置信的努力。对人的大脑而言，学习阅读或许是最艰难、最具革命性的一件事情了。如果不相信，你可以看看成年文盲在学习阅读时所付出的努力。上学不是一件轻松的事情，对于大多数人来说，是一件无趣的事情。然而，如果幸运的话，你或许能够找到一位真正的老师。我一生中最大的幸运，就是遇到了三位真正的老师：第一位是高中老师，教授自然科学和数学；第二位是斯坦福大学的教授，教授创新写作；第三位是我的朋友兼合伙人——埃德·雷克茨。

    我逐渐相信，杰出的老师就是杰出的艺术家，并且就像杰出的艺术家一样稀少。甚至可以说，教书是一门最伟大的艺术，因为这门艺术是以人的思想和精神作为媒介的。

    我的三位老师都有下述的共同特点：他们都热爱教学，且并非一味地灌输知识，而是想办法激发你的求知。在这样的老师的影响下，你的恐惧感消失了，未咒成了可知，从而拓宽了你的视野。曾经令人畏惧的真理变得美丽而珍贵，这才是最重要的。

    我的第一位老师除了拥有上述的共同优点外，她总能有新的发现。在这里，我想详细地谈谈这位老师。

    她总是鼓励我们在课堂上挥着课本高声讨论，我们班成了全校最吵闹的班级，然而她似乎没有意识到。我们思索世界的万事万物，从不局限于课本的内容。她给我们播种下好奇，我们收获的则是真相和真理，就像攥在手掌中的萤火虫发出的光。

    她在教授基础知识上失败了，然而这些知识是必须学习的，因此，嘶学校解聘了，这或许又是合乎常理的。然而，她给我们留下了对纯粹知识的热情，并激发了我们永远也不会消失的好奇心。我曾经连简单的数学题都不会做，然而，她使我认识到，抽象的数学就像音乐一般美好。她的离开令我们伤心，但是她在我们心中留下的光明从来也不曾逝去。

    et ho school is. the learning by memory of all the basic things one must kno effort. learning to read is probably the most difficult and revolutionary thing that happens to the human brain and if you don’t believe that, h school, my second, professor of creative  at stanford, and my third reat teacher is a great artist and that there are as fereat artists. it might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.

    my three had these things in common: they all loved . they did not tell, they catalyzed a burning desire to kno e. but most important of all, the truth, that dangerous stuff, became beautiful and precious.

    i shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the other things, she brought discovery.

    she aroused us to shouting, book- discussion. she had the noisiest class in school and she didn’t even seem to knoed the ht in facts or truths shielded in our hands like captured fireflies.

    she htly so, for failing to teach fundamentals. such things must be learned. but she left a passion in us for the pure knoh her i sensed that abstract mathematics ht did not go out.</p>
