    当柯立芝任副总统时，他和夫人住在华盛顿的维拉德饭店。一天晚上，火灾的警报声让所有旅客都来到大厅里。即便这小小的火情被控制住之后，消防队员还是不允许大家离开大厅。最后，柯立芝变得有点不耐烦，起身就要往楼上走。这时，消防队队长拦住他的去路，问道：“你是什么人？”“我是副总统。”柯立芝回答。“那好，去吧！”队长说。可是柯立芝刚刚上了一两级楼梯，又第二次被消防队长叫住了。“你是什么副总统？”队长满腹狐疑地盘问道。“我是美国的副总统。”柯立芝回答。“回来。”消防队长突然怒冲冲地喊道，“我还以为你是饭店的副总经理呢！” （注  vice-president即是“副总统”的意思，也可以指企业的“副总经理”。）
